Modern Furniture
Modern furniture today uses a wide range of unconventional materials, such as vinyl, cane, and jute. Not only the construction materials, but also their styles have experienced changes. Furniture designing has become as critical as fashion designing or architecture.
One peculiar aspect is that some features that were regarded as landmarks of old style furniture have virtually been excluded. Wood is out, vinyl is in. Dark contours with musty wooden smells have been replaced by bright colors with varied patterns. Wrought iron is no longer used – it has been replaced by aluminum and steel. Modern furniture molds are so flexible that they can easily craft any desired shape of furniture.
It can be assumed that today furniture is priced more for its design than for its make. There is much more of machine work than of handcraft work. This makes manufacturing costs lower, but the design is all that adds to the cost.
